Packing the West

Packing the West, a Western Writers of America Classroom Literary project, tells America’s story of the frontier from the perspective of the American Indians. The stories are also of the trappers and hunters who navigated the wilderness, the black cowboys who wrangled horses and cattle, the mountain men and fur traders, and the women who traveled across the country to stake gold claims and become school teachers.

These people of the West created communities, formed governments, and enhanced civic engagement in many ways.

Packing the West is a presentation of the past of our nation in the words and through the eyes of the men and women who made that past possible and who embody the idea that the progress of the American experience is never complete.

Packing the West is a new kind of history teacher.
